Vascularized Endocrine Constructs Offer New Hope for Scalable Insulin Delivery

This highlight presents Amniogel, a vascularized endocrine construct developed by Bellofatto et al., combining pancreatic islets, blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs), and amniotic membrane-derived hydrogel for improved extrahepatic islet transplantation in type 1 diabetes.The platform restores extracellular matrix support, enables prevascularization, and achieves better islet engraftment and glycemic control, particularly in subcutaneous sites.It offers a scalable and promising strategy to overcome major limitations of current islet transplantation.
